The 6S Social Network

What can YOU say in six sentences?

Hi Guys,

After receiving so many emails from you (and telepathically communicating with Kate, who seems to have an endless supply of super-powers), I thought it'd be a good idea to set up an "official" comments and suggestions page - a way to let everyone cut loose and voice their honest opinions about the main site, and of course our home here on the 6S Social Network.

What's working for you? What isn't? What features here on the Network do you love? Which can you live without? What would make this an even more enjoyable place to spend a little time?

Say whatever you like, whenever you like, and as often as you like - and say it HERE! On this page, in this thread! Feel free to bounce ideas off me, and each other. I'll be checking back often... and taking careful notes.

You guys rock. Thanks.

Rob,

I haven't been through all the suggestions, and this one may already be here. I would like to be able to edit from the "preview" page. Several times in my urgency to edit I have tried to backspace and lost the whole damn kit and kaboodle.

Thank you for asking. I would spend my entire day here at 6S, but I would starve, they would turn the electricity off, and my children would grow to hate me!

Hi Sister,

Let me play around with this and see what I find out...

A*K-
Always ready to morph into my Dylan Thomas impression with you- although I tend to hang with the Russians and prefer Stolie or Absolut (or wine if no vodka is handy...or beer....or sterno .....but that's another story). Thanks so much for your comments. I'm yours whenever you want to hang.
Best-

Hi Rob
Check out my blog post "Six Sentences Etiquette" I think Sandra has a good point

Comment by Sandra Knisely: I think an etiquette list with the stamp of McEvily approval would actually be really helpful for new members, especially as the ranks continue to swell. The points you've made are good ones, and I know when I jumped into sixes a couple of weeks ago, I was terrified to post and do something un-kosher. I have a feeling most posters guilty of breaking your rules aren't malicious and would definitely stop annoying behavior if it was pointed out as inappropriate. Thanks for drawing up this list!!

I'm touched by these responses, i'm just an old guy (according to Olive, my newest friend), and don't have a great philosophy to share, but I fancy myself a historian, writing about people most people never heard of---
And Chris, your etiquette list has strengthend my confidence in my stuff--you like me, you really like me!!
The format is perfect for me; I've been criticized over the years for being far too "wordy", even (especially) in business letters.
Anyhow, thanks to all--Upward and Onward---

My attention span won't last for ten pages, so humble apologies if this is a repeat -
Since people seem to take issue with things falling off the first page too quickly, perhaps that "Read All" button could be changed to "View all" or something. Or added. So you could click on that and see a longer list of recent posts.

Or not. Just a thought...

This new activity log on the front page here at 6*ning takes the fun out of dropping by to see what people are doing, with the icons I can check in often and scan through quickly, without the icons I don't much bother more then once a day... any chance you could switch back to have icons show up with each activity?

I know it's a commerical operation but sure would be nice if before unilateral changes are made some sort of member board could weigh in...

Hi Craig,

Unfortunately, I don't have control over some of the design changes that happen. The site is hosted by Ning, and they occasionally make changes to the general look and feel of the site. There are lots of things I CAN control, but the icon thing you mention is a Ning change...

Best,
Rob

If we were lucky enough to get into Vol. 2, what happens to the second six we sent with our entry? Are you going to use it or do we take it back? Should we work on Vol. 3 when we have time? I haven't had time to read everyone elses questions so forgive me if you have to answer this twice?

I love the site. :) And it helps me write just to think of it in 6s. However, I do have a question. I noticed on the main 6S blog that many of the chosen/featured entries, while interesting, have multiple verb tense errors, etc that just jump out. So my question is this: are these chosen for their total merit or because of a cool theme or what? I am sorry about this; I'm a writing teacher and this sort of thing always perplexes me. I get creative writing, but I as a teacher and part-time writer wonder about how/why certain entries would be chosen and/or not edited. It's an honest question. I find that the quality of a writing site is judged by many according to the quality of the work that is featured.

Please don't jump on me now!! LOL

Hi Lisa,

I hope this makes sense...

When a writer has a unique way of expressing something, even if it’s grammatically incorrect, I tend to shy away from dressing it up. When the site began, I edited a lot more, polishing each piece. Then I started to feel like I was steering away from the site’s original intention: say anything you like. What’s implied there is “in your own way.” I do edit for clarity – I want each piece to represent the writer’s best version. If someone submits a first draft, something hasty, I can usually smell it, and I request a rewrite.

When I edit too much, it can feel like certain expressions are less the writer’s and more mine, and that’s something I just never want to do.

Okay, that being said, I do miss my share of verb tense errors! I fess up!
