Hi everyone,

I responded to Nik aka CJT's thread, but then G and I agreed that it might be better to simply start a new thread for all 2011 HoW talk, kicking it off with my most recent findings...

I've placed several phone calls over the past few days. Let me run down what I've discovered. I'll do so by providing a typical example. This place (http://www.swissmountain.com/) is one I've contacted. It is in a fairly secluded setting, but is within only ten or so minutes from Blowing Rock, a terrific small mountain town. They have about 40 cabins, sleeping anywhere from 4 to 8. Rates are $90 - 135 per night, and they require a 50% deposit to reserve a cabin.

So let's say we...

- Want to reserve four cabins, each sleeping 4.

- We opt for the "sleeps four" cabin - $100 per night.

- 4 nights x 4 cabins x $100 = $1600.

- Deposit required = $800

- Commitment from 16 people = $50 per person

We also have the option of staying in one of the inns in Blowing Rock. My wife and I have stayed every year for the past 7 years in the Hemlock Inn. It is not fancy, but it's clean and quiet. Rooms would be $99 per night on weeknights and $149 per night on weekends. This would work like booking any hotel room - we each would be responsible for calling and making our own reservation, no deposit required other than your credit card number.

I need to get a feel for what the majority would like to do. Personally, I believe there are merits to either direction, and I'll try my best to do what the majority feels would create the best atmosphere. Knowing what I know of the area, it will be a good time regardless of where we stay.

I am targeting the nights of Thurs 7/21 through Saturday 7/23, leaving Sunday 7/24.

Please post your thoughts below. Thank you!

We're in ... either option. Just set a date.
Like Mike, I'm in either way.  With that being said...The easiest option would probably be with the Inn because each person is responsible for their own accommodations.  I know that I won't be able to spend four days at the HoW shindig, so I would feel better if I just took care of myself.  There are few things I dislike more than inconveniencing people.

deeply tempted...when were you planning on doing this? my job is seasonal and if i request time off in the spring/summer i might have to call in dead...  ;)

also, is HoW like a writing retreat, a hangout, a... ?  (so when i call in dead i know what i'm doing)

Sorry, I've edited the original post to include target dates.

Like Elliott, I may not be able to stay all four days. We will be leaving for the coast the following weekend, so I don't think I could get another two days off of work. My stay would probably be only Friday night.

i'm all for the inn, as well!  not sure i can be there the whole time.  and i'm assuming that blowing rock is in NC, right?  never been there and it sounds like a great trip!
Yes, Blowing Rock is in NC.  One of the most beautiful parts of NC, I might add.

Bolton filled me in since I have been MIA on here. . .

I REALLY want to go, but I'll have to see what my summer plans are for the stepson and travel. Plus, I'll have a two month year-old, so it depends if my husband get rearrange his work schedule. I'm thinking if I go, it will just be for the weekend.

All your time and effort are appreciated by everyone, I am sure.  It is always wonderful to spend time with like-minded individuals.  I wish you large success in pulling all of this together, and I look forward to hearing about everyone's plans.
very noncommital of you, Ms. Grey.
I have said this to several people who messaged me over the past months, but I would like to say this to all: House of Writers (teresa named it because she longed for a place where we would all be under the same roof) is not an all-or-nothing event. If you want a gathering in your neck of the woods, just find a place and date and post it. It might surprise you how many people will want to come. There's no high council that confers legitimacy on a particular gathering by any means! I'd be thrilled if the Brits wanted to host a HoW at some point. It would motivate me to get off my lazy butt and renew my passport.
I would be totally up for an overseas venture next summer  (2012)!
How's about here in Wales for summer of 2012?
